How to care for your yard's sod
Immediately After Installation (Days 1 - 14)
- Water immediately after installation to soak soil 4 – 6 inches deep.
- Water 2 – 3 times daily if temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit
- Keep sod consistently moist but avoid standing water
- Limit foot traffic during establishment
Weeks 3 - 4
- Reduce watering to once daily, deep soaking preferred.
- Test root establishment by gently tugging on corners.
- First mow when grass reaches 3 – 4 inches; remove no more than 1/3 blade height.
Established Lawn
- Water deeply 1 – 2 times per week depending on rainfall (about 1 – 1.5 inches total weekly).
- Maintain mowing height between 2.5 – 3.5 inches.
- Sharpen mower blades regularly to prevent disease.
Indiana Seasonal Fertilization Schedule
- Early Spring (March – April) – Light balanced fertilizer.
- Late Spring (May) – Nitrogen application growth boost.
- Early Fall (September) – Balanced fertilizer for root strength.
